Labor Day Weekend Plans

It looks like we have a great labor day weekend coming up. We will be operating all weekend at Alexandria, including Monday thanks to Bob Currie on tow. The away weekend at Terry Airport was canceled. We have one Blanik in working order and the rest of the fleet is begging for a workout.

Nancy and I plan to bring our pop-up camper and camp Saturday and Sunday nights. We'd love to have some camping company either of those nights.

We are going to fire up the BBQ on Saturday night. We have some burgers left over from the women's convention and we'll cook up as many as we have takers. If you like, bring something to share - or just stick around for the burgers. We'll probably eat about 6 pm, or whenever operations are over. If there is demand we'll do the same thing Sunday night.

So, see you this weekend!

MONDAY FLYING

You didn't miss a thing ! All of us who flew today (Monday) collectively stayed up for less than 30 minutes I believe .
And for once Dr Jack was wrong , or maybe the remnants of "Fay" moved into our area quicker than forecast .
My impression was that the guy who most wanted to keep flying was - you probably guessed it - Bob Currie He is most anxious to complete his 3000 tows and only has 24 to go . Sorry Bob no second tows were even considered after you dropped us in less than perfect lift !
The good news however is that the newly planted south runway looks fantastic, both from the ground and from the air - thanks to our professional turf manager . Next time you see Kurt tell him WELL DONE. With a little rain we should see green cover in the next month and maybe next spring we'll all be able to use the south runway.
Also a "headsup " for a social event at the club at the end of Summer ( SATURDAY SEPT 20 ) Plan to spend the evening with us at Alex after flying that day of course. Keep a look out for more news.

ASW-15 for sale

Either all, or part of, the ASW-15 belonging to Larry Pennington, Dave
Newill and Darren Bedwell is for sale. Contact one of the partners for
more information.

I'd like to see it stay at Alexandria. Built in 1970, it still flies
beautifully and easily. It's suitable - even ideal - for a budding
cross-country pilot on a budget. Ask anybody who's flown one.

Remember, September and October frequently bring excellent soaring weather!

-Darren

All Day Instruction

Student Pilots:

Are you aware than instruction can take place all day? Some time ago the club changed its policy; instructors are on duty all day. Mornings are reserved for instruction only, as always. At 1:00pm this changes and priority is given to launching licensed pilots; however, student instruction continues, mixed in with the licensed pilots for the rest of the day. You can add you name back to the list and get additional flights as the day goes along.

Fwd:This August has proven excellent!

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: ZASoars

Those of you who have flown the past few weeks will surely agree that
the weather has been as good as one could hope for this August . In so
many past years we have had to contend with hot humid conditions and
hazy skies in August .
Not so in 2008 - the smog must have moved to Beijing ?
Did anyone happen to check out the OLC postings for SSA Region 6 the
past week ? A large number of 400km + flights were made out of Caesar
Creek with John Lubon flying over 500 last Saturday and then 650 km
yesterday ( Sunday ).
VT and ZA flew up to Northern Indiana and back but chalked up only
modest 300km + flights . The difference was that further south the
lift was going to over 7000msl while the tops were a mere 5500 here .
Many other club members took advantage of the great conditions too -
ask Dan he can tell you about taking off ( after landing ) in a
recently harvested wheat field .All good experience Dan !

No Instruction Sunday

Both Blaniks are inoperable owing to some minor damage and no instruction can take place Sunday Aug. 17.

I could not get the general mailing list on our web site to work and have not emailed anyone except your three.

Members and tow pilots should be informed that operations for other aircraft can begin around noon.

Kendallville Soaring Invitational

Kendallville Soaring club has invited CISS for a long weekend. Here is their invite:

We have arranged some excellent soaring weather for the weekend of August 21, 22, 23. and 24th and are looking forward to having a lot of fun at the Kendallville airport. Tows will be available starting on Thursday through Sunday. The local 2-33 is available for rental. If individual schedules do not permit attendance all days, we hope you will consider joining us for the weekend.

The program will consist of some local fun flying, and some contest tasks, depending on the interest and desires of the participants. A Brazilian BBQ cookout is planned for 7 pm on Saturday Evening. If you plan to attend, please email Paul Sprandel bolomk12@mchsi.com to assist him in planning the party. The cost will be nominal. If anyone needs information on local motels, campgrounds, RV parks, etc., please email me Jke4034@aol.com and we will be in contact with you.

Fwd: No flying today ( Wednesday 8/6/08)

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: ZASoars
Unfortunately due to a combination of only moderate prospects of good
soaring flight and work schedule interferences no flying is planned
for today. Friday looks even less attractive from a weather point of
view so maybe we will all have to wait until the weekend which is
shaping up well weather wise .

Fwd: Soaring this week ? [8/5]

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: ZASoars

Could we have a show of hands re who might like ( or be able to ) fly
this week .
I'm having a little difficulty looking at the forecasts deciding which
day might be best but am thinking possibly Wed and maybe Friday.
If we choose Wed Bob Currie has volunteered to tow . And I believe we
could probably find a willing tow pilot for Friday.

Any thoughts ?

Ron (ZA).
