Fwd: New Years Day SOARING - latest

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: ZASoars
CISS Members ,

We definitely plan to fly on Thursday ( January 1 , 2009 ) .

Bob Currie and Lynn Joyce have volunteered to tow and we have one
Blanik ( 809S ) and one Tow plane ( 87Z ) available and insured for
use.

At this time the weather looks OK . Not warm ( maybe 40 for a high )
and a little windy ( 10 + out of the South ) . Cloud cover may be 50 %
+ .

If you would like to fly plan to be at the field by 11am to help get
the aircraft and equipment out for a through inspection before flying
which hopefully will be before or around noon. Remember to dress warm
- no shorts please Brad it makes us all feel cold !

Happy New Year and a GREAT SOARING SEASON to all .

Fwd: Maintenance update

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: ZASoars

Due to the less than great weather this week we have not yet been able
to arrange to have the gliders "annualled " .We therefore have no
plans for a work party this coming Saturday.

Our plan remains to get the annuals done before the end of the year
which will allow those really keen members that like to make their
first flights of the New Year on Jan 1 to do so .

However if you really want to spend time at the " Field of Dreams "
this Saturday you might like to take along your plumbing tools and a
towel for the shower ! The Plumbing Crowd are making great progress
installing the new "club shower " and maybe your help will move the
job to completion . Call Taylor / De Witt / Melin / Saunders to find
out if they need help !

The Maintenance Crew.

Fwd: A JOB WELL DONE - THANK YOU

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: ZASoars

To all the club members who generously gave of their time to help with
the winter maintenance projects this Nov / Dec we say many thanks .

Your dedication to helping get the club equipment cleaned up and ready
for their "Annual Inspections " really does help the club keep costs
down . Hopefully also you have learned a little about what the inside
of a flying machine looks like and appreciate what it takes to keep
the equipment in good condition.
Unfortunately not much flying was done these past weekends but the
hangar talk seemed to fill in at least part of the need to be around
gliders together with other flying types . Lunch each week, after
CFIG Nyal gave the OK to drop tools for that break , was we know the
highlight of the day for many !

This year has been about as good as it gets in terms of help - we
really appreciate every one of you fine club members .

The Maintenance Crew.

ps. As most of the work is now done and only some re-assembly of seat
pans etc. is needed after the inspections take place we will send out
an advisory about if there will be a work party next Saturday -
assuming we can arrange the inspections for early that day - check you
email.

Fwd: Maintenance this month of December

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: ZASoars
Many thanks to the " Regulars" who have come out each Saturday to help us get the club equipment ready for the ' 09 soaring season.

Our plan is to finish up what work we can do on the club equipment in the coming 3 weekends to be able to get the gliders "annualled" before year end . The tow planes will be inspected in the new year .

This weekend the plan is to replace the brake linings on one of the Blaniks and then move the last two gliders (PW 5 / 809S) into the hangar for work Dec 13 and 20 .

As the weather looks marginal this weekend , and as we won't need such a large crowd of helpers to work on the Blanik Brakes feel free to " take a break " yourself this Saturday December (6th) . BUT please remember we need a good turnout on the 13 th and maybe also on the 20th .The maintenance crew will be at the field this Saturday in any event and if you have already scheduled to come out feel free to do so!

Thanks again ,

The Maintenance Crew.

Yes no less than 14 members were in attendance for the work day today .

Many thanks to the members who helped with maintenance today . Most of
the work has now been completed on the Grob and on 898 . Both look
really good and are ready for their annual inspections .

and 87Z into the heated hangar for work that will begin next Saturday
- so come on out and work off the excesses of Thanksgiving together
with your gliding friends next week end . And if you are a Blanik
pilot this will be your chance to help get one of them ready for
service in ' 09.

A special vote of thanks to the tow pilots who show up and have really
done a fantastic job on the first of the tow planes - one of them even
helped with work on the Grob !

Happy Thanksgiving to all .

Final Club Contest Results

The 2008 CISS Club Cross-Country Contest ended October 31 and the results are in the history books. Let’s look at some statistics before jumping to the scores: 15 pilots submitted 74 flights and flew an awesome 6,815 miles on 17 different days. The average flight was 92 miles and the average speed was 42.1 miles/hour. And this year 10 pilots were scored on the maximum of four flights, compared to 7 pilots last year. Overall this year, we flew more days, more flights and more distance than last year. “Attaboys” all around !

But not everything changes: Ron Clarke and Brad Hays finished in first and second place again this year. However, Gerald Simpson jumped from 6th place last year to 3rd place this year. He submitted nine flights to the contest and had some very impressive distances and speeds. Obviously he’s got his Discus B and the new ClearNav really dialed in now. And look out for Mario. He averaged 978 points on each of his three flights. If he had made the maximum of four flights, he could have bumped into the top 4.

In the team category, Ristow/Taylor eeked out a narrow 14 point win over Ruble/Saunders proving…….. well, I guess we have four good pilots in two essentially equal ships!

Now congratulations to all who took part; I hope you achieved some personal bests, earned a few bragging rights, enjoyed some friendly rivalry and stretched yourselves just a little more than you thought you could. Let’s do it again next year!

Fwd: Wednesday Soaring Report

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: ZASoars

On the first post election day ( Guy Fawkes day in the land of the
Great Pale faced Queen ) the conditions were exceptional ( for
November ) . Three of us lucky devils flew ( George in the PW and Nyal
and I in the Grob )
Dr Jack obviously had not heard that Indiana is now " Blue" but with
amazingly strong thermals for the low sun angle . We found better lift
than he forecast . The ground is of course very dry and the odd farmer
is still harvesting and stirring up the air with big equipment . Nyal
and I used such a location several times to connect low level with a
thermal that saved us . Tops were 3700msl and the scenery spectacular
.
Keep looking ahead for some post frontal days during the next 4 weeks
I think they will be the best bet .
Also don't forget the maintenance crew welcomes any and all help on
Saturday mornings so that the club equipment will be ready for the
next season .

PS. Thanx to Bob Currie for towing - he's now working on his 4000 tow goal .

Great Last Weekend

What a great end to the soaring season! Beautiful weather, and plenty of flying accompanied our last weekend of our first season at our Field of Dreams. In addition we have gotten a good start on our winter projects. Dan, Jeff and Mark repaired the lights in both big hangars using a scissors lift. Kurt inspected the roof. Ed L. adjusted the big hangar doors so they fit properly. Thanks guys!

There's plenty to do. We meet every Saturday morning at 9 AM. Come out and help. There's a list of winter projects in the latest wingtips. The list is also posted on the white board in the office. If you see a project you'd like to work on, give George or Kurt a call or send an email. Or just come out and get working!

The flying may have stopped, but the fun of CISS continues. See you Saturday!

Crew Chief Mario has cancelled flying for Sunday 10/26/08. The weather forecast is for waaaay too much wind.

Fellow Cross Country Pilots,

I note that the new OLC season has begun and that CISS is running 2nd
only to Ionia in our Region 6. ( Caesar Creek are bringing up the
rear ) .

With only a few possible x/c days left this season how about we set
the goal of grabbing the lead before the thermals finally give out . I
know we can do it ( and even submitted a modest 49 mi flight myself
earlier this week to help the cause ) .

Lets go for it , CISS !

Club Contest Update

October 11 produced big smiles for 6 of the 7 pilots who took part: one pilot could only manage a “Sheez – at least I made it back!”. And CISS set a new club record for the most pilots to turn in scores on the same day – cool.

Unexpectedly, mother nature produced good, no make that great, soaring conditions even with a light wind out of the SSE. The temps reached about 80 deg to generate lift to over 6000’ msl. Most pilots assembled unenthusiastically, but once airborne, the mood changed as they went through the start gate at nearly 5000’. Although blue over the field, there was a cloud field starting about 20 miles west of the airport. Some pilots headed straight there, while some ventured north first, expecting the clouds to fill in towards the east. That never happened, so the scores partially reflect the direction of flight, especially in the early going. Ron Clarke, winner for the day headed directly west into the cumulus to begin his 108 mile flight. Scot Ortman had an incredible (for Indiana)288 fpm average lift by heading straight west also. Coming home he must have been so excited about the flight, he forgot to finish above the minimum 1000’ agl height and incurred a minor scoring penalty.

Most pilots never got below about 3500’ msl which made for comfortable flying, although not quite as much in the blue. However, as Todd Rutledge found out, lift below this band was elusive and weak: he made no less than four saves from under 1000’ above the ground. His first words after landing were “I never worked so hard”.

Here are the aggregate scores so far this year (best 4 flights/pilot). We have two more weekends left.

Of Course The First 2999 Were A Little Shaky...

Congratulate tow pilot Bob Currie; he's finally got this towing thing figured out. Today he made his 3000th tow, and got a good head start on his next thousand.

Overall, it was a good day at the airport, with a total of 29 glider flights.

We'll probably get a contest day out of it, although more than one returning pilot was overheard to say "the other guys must have had it easier than I did."

p.s. When you see Bob, ask him how many tows he has now. When he says "three thousand," look surprised and ask him "well how many fingers do you have?" He thinks this joke is hilarious.

Update -- ZA Adds:

Never give up on the weather in October ! Today was an excellent cross country day - especially if you made it to the cloud fields west of Alex . Dr Jack was spot on and the winds were very manageable and less then in some of the forecasts .By US standards CISS pilots gave everyone a run for their money today ( check OLC ) .
I know that everyone who flew cross country must have enjoyed it . I know Tod Rutledge made his goal of miles for the season on the OLC and I enjoyed some good time flying together with Scot for many miles .
It did sound like Dan might have had a recorder problem but we all know where you went - way north and then back - well done ! Terry you made the right decision to go get your prandle tube !
Nice to see Mitch at the field - pity he didn't bring his sailplane to see if he still remembers how to do it in Indiana conditions !
Finally we can't do any of it without the help of the crews and tow pilots . Congrats to Bob on his 3000th tow . FANTASTIC I say ! and thank you crew .

Fwd: WOW - I SHOULD HAVE MADE IT BACK !

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: ZASoars

WOW - I SHOULD HAVE MADE IT BACK !

Yesterday ( Saturday) was better than most probably thought . At least
I can say that with certainty now.
The day was blue but thermals reached up to 5500msl later in the day
and I made it easily down to Caesar Creek . After a bit of a delay
getting back in the air I thought - GREAT . There were some good
looking clouds over the first 10 miles of the return course . However
I could not find good lift under them , so battled my way towards Alex
in the blue until near sunset when I landed at Carroll airstrip 12
miles short ( very good ). Thanks to Larry Miller who towed me back
within seconds of the remaining daylight disappearing.

THE INTERESTING PART IS : I checked the OLC results from yesterday
to see where the Caesar Creek crowd were flying , and you should do
the same . Check Don Burns flight log - AMAZING . I haven't spoken to
him yet but I can see that about the time I saw those good looking
clouds ( 20:20 ) Don climbed to 8700msl . Maybe a thermal up the front
of one of them or maybe some kind of wave action associated with them
. I live and learn every time I fly and now know I should have easily
made it back to Alex if I had only figured out how to use those clouds
!!

ZA.

P.S.:

I spoke to Don Burns this evening ( Don you may recall is the CC
member who has retrieved "The Trophy " from us at Alex many times )
Don told me that his climb to 8700msl ( above cloud ) yesterday was
only a modest accomplishment . He says several others he was flying
with climbed to 12000 msl or better ! The moral of the story ( for me
anyway ) is - always explore around , out front of , besides just
under unusual strong looking clouds . And don't think just 'cos the
winds at your level are docile ( around 5-8 knots max ) that they are
not stronger higher up - and generating wave maybe ! ( Actually I had
thought in the morning that upper winds might be a negative factor -
it turns out they were a very positive factor ) .

Keep looking for the good October days ahead .

Fwd: OCTOBER IS GOOD - AND THE NUMBERS SHOW IT !

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: ZASoars

October can offer some very good cross country opportunities . Based
on records kept over the past 28 years soaring in Central Indiana I
know you can plan on some good flights over the next month .

The numbers show that for all cross country flights recorded that were
longer than 100km (60mi ) :

* Each week in October allowed for such flights . The best were made
in the first 3 weeks , but week 4 also provided opportunities.

* 3 Flights of over 400 km were made .

* The average distance flown on all October x/c flights was greater
than 200 kms.

KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR GOOD CONDITIONS COMING , ESPECIALLY IF YOU CAN FLY
DURING THE WEEK . MAYBE YOU EVEN HAVE SOME UNUSED VACATION DAYS TO
BURN ?
THIS WEEK LOOKS LIKE MAYBE THURSDAY OR FRIDAY .

DT Reports:
Uh oh, the race for 3rd place is really getting close. Many pilots with 4 flights are now bunched up, and with a lot of good days left, the standings could change frequently. Ristow only needs one more flight to also be in the hunt for our World Series of Soaring, which ends Oct. 31. The boys of summer. Gotta go now. DT

Don't you wish you had a 46:1 L/D glider to fly ?

Well why not get yourself checked out to fly the Grob 103 !

Yesterday Jack Hensel and I took the Grob for a cross country flight
up north in Indiana to Huntington and back . The conditions were good
but not great , meaning that we got to 5000msl a couple of times and
the climb rate in thermals for the whole flight was 2.2 knots average
( Thermal strengths were as Dr Jack predicted - around 4 - 5 knots max
) .

BUT by using cloud streets and flying conservatively we covered over
90 miles at an average L/D of 46 : 1 . ( Quite a bit better than the
published L/D of 38 : 1 ). We have a great glider in our club to learn
to fly cross country in !

No flying Saturday [9/13/08]

CISS will not be flying today due to weather. The forecast for Alexandria is “Hazardous Weather Outlook” with 60% chance of rain and thunderstorms. The Fort Wayne wx is “Hazardous Weather Outlook” plus a “Tornado Watch” and 90% chance of rain all day. The metar forecast is for ceilings at 2000’ agl all morning, lifting to 3000’ after 1pm. But by then, sfc winds will be gusting to 22 kts. Visibility and ceilings in Indy should be a little better, but at both Indy and Fort Wayne, forecast winds at 3000’ agl will be 30 kts or greater all day.

Gasoline prices are spiking too, with some stations possibly running out. So it looks like today is a good time to catch up on that honeydo list and get some frequent flyer passes for the better days to come. Don Taylor, Crew Chief filling in for Darren.

As With Katrina, NWS Is Not Mincing Words With Ike

The news this morning is full of stories about Hurricane Ike, which is
about to hit Texas (and is due here sometime Sunday). The headlines
are quoting the expression "certain death" which appears in the
National Weather Service forecast for someplace or other.

That doesn't sound good... I thought I would go read the actual
forecast.

Here it is.

It actually says "MAY FACE CERTAIN DEATH," not "WILL FACE CERTAIN DEATH." That is not reassuring in the least:

Saturday 9/13/08: Weather and Crew Issues

Regarding this coming Saturday 9/13, the crew situation is unsettled.
Don Taylor was scheduled to be operations director that day (having
traded days with me), but he's dealing with an emergency and may not
be able to make it to the airport. I can't make it out either, having
made unbreakable plans to be elsewhere.

However, this may all be washed away by the weather forecast, which
calls for a LOT of rain all weekend.

Stay tuned!

Don's request to the membership - in the event any flying is possible
Saturday - follows:

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Don Taylor don_taylor

[ ]...in the event I can't make it, if everyone who comes out on
Saturday pitches in a little, the operation will go just fine. The
one thing that could minimize this problem is that the forecast for
Saturday is not very good. I don't usually wish for bad wx, but I am
making an exception this time :-) Thanks, and I hope to see you
Saturday. DT

Conventional wisdom has always been that an Easterly wind is no good
for soaring. Or as Bob Gillan would quote " Wind from the east no
good for man or beast " .
HOWEVER yesterday we had a brisk easterly wind, 5 mph on the ground
and a little stronger at flying levels ,maybe 10mph .
The day was as good as it gets in Indiana . And if you checked the OLC
there was a 500 km flight in Michigan and several 300km flights in
Ohio and out of Alex.
Seven CISS members all flew cross country and although the early
cumulus dissipated and only a few wisps showed where the lift was ,
there was plenty of it and strong. The thermal tops were over 6000msl
and average thermal strengths were around 4 knots. One flight log
showed it possible to fly more than 50 miles without turning and maybe
there were more who also enjoyed streets of lift like that. Remember
there will be at least another month of 300km plus days ahead . Be
ready and prepare ahead for the flight you want and above all be
willing to go even if the wind is from the east !

purposes ( tel 849 8983 or e-mail <ZASOARS [at] aol [dot] com> ) .
The picnic will begin around 6pm rain or shine. This will be one of
the first occasions when the whole club can get together with families
since the purchase of Alexandria Airfield.
The picnic will feature various Brazilian Barbequed meats and some
very tasty sides. The cost will be $12 per head and we ask that you
bring your own beverages of choice.

Brazilian BBQ - Sept 20th

CISS members,
As we are approaching the end of the first Summer at our own field it has been decided that we need to celebrate with a picnic. And by the way its also the Vernal equinox on September 20th - the last day this year when we still have more daylight than dark !
Arrangements are that we will hold a Brazilian BBQ which will include 4 different kinds of grilled meat, accompanied by various delicious Brazilian sides. As well, a unique grilled pineapple desert rounds off the meal. The best news is that the cooking will be done for all.
The party will start after flying on SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 20TH AT AROUND 6 PM. We hope for excellent weather but with plenty of room in our center hangar we will celebrate fair weather or otherwise .
At the end of the evening the club will unveil the beautifully made "Honors Board" which Tod Herrli has built and which recognizes the club members who gave to "Field of Dreams" capital fund .
The cost of the very excellent Brazilian meal will be $12 per head at the picnic - please bring your own beverages .
As we need to know in advance for planning purposes how many will attend please let Ron Clarke know if we should count you in and do feel free to invite some friends. No excuses please , we are hoping for a 100% turnout !
e-mail ZASOARS@aol.com or phone 849-8983 .

Labor Day Weekend Plans

It looks like we have a great labor day weekend coming up. We will be operating all weekend at Alexandria, including Monday thanks to Bob Currie on tow. The away weekend at Terry Airport was canceled. We have one Blanik in working order and the rest of the fleet is begging for a workout.

Nancy and I plan to bring our pop-up camper and camp Saturday and Sunday nights. We'd love to have some camping company either of those nights.

We are going to fire up the BBQ on Saturday night. We have some burgers left over from the women's convention and we'll cook up as many as we have takers. If you like, bring something to share - or just stick around for the burgers. We'll probably eat about 6 pm, or whenever operations are over. If there is demand we'll do the same thing Sunday night.

So, see you this weekend!

MONDAY FLYING

You didn't miss a thing ! All of us who flew today (Monday) collectively stayed up for less than 30 minutes I believe .
And for once Dr Jack was wrong , or maybe the remnants of "Fay" moved into our area quicker than forecast .
My impression was that the guy who most wanted to keep flying was - you probably guessed it - Bob Currie He is most anxious to complete his 3000 tows and only has 24 to go . Sorry Bob no second tows were even considered after you dropped us in less than perfect lift !
The good news however is that the newly planted south runway looks fantastic, both from the ground and from the air - thanks to our professional turf manager . Next time you see Kurt tell him WELL DONE. With a little rain we should see green cover in the next month and maybe next spring we'll all be able to use the south runway.
Also a "headsup " for a social event at the club at the end of Summer ( SATURDAY SEPT 20 ) Plan to spend the evening with us at Alex after flying that day of course. Keep a look out for more news.

ASW-15 for sale

Either all, or part of, the ASW-15 belonging to Larry Pennington, Dave
Newill and Darren Bedwell is for sale. Contact one of the partners for
more information.

I'd like to see it stay at Alexandria. Built in 1970, it still flies
beautifully and easily. It's suitable - even ideal - for a budding
cross-country pilot on a budget. Ask anybody who's flown one.

Remember, September and October frequently bring excellent soaring weather!

All Day Instruction

Student Pilots:

Are you aware than instruction can take place all day? Some time ago the club changed its policy; instructors are on duty all day. Mornings are reserved for instruction only, as always. At 1:00pm this changes and priority is given to launching licensed pilots; however, student instruction continues, mixed in with the licensed pilots for the rest of the day. You can add you name back to the list and get additional flights as the day goes along.

Fwd:This August has proven excellent!

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: ZASoars

Those of you who have flown the past few weeks will surely agree that
the weather has been as good as one could hope for this August . In so
many past years we have had to contend with hot humid conditions and
hazy skies in August .
Not so in 2008 - the smog must have moved to Beijing ?
Did anyone happen to check out the OLC postings for SSA Region 6 the
past week ? A large number of 400km + flights were made out of Caesar
Creek with John Lubon flying over 500 last Saturday and then 650 km
yesterday ( Sunday ).
VT and ZA flew up to Northern Indiana and back but chalked up only
modest 300km + flights . The difference was that further south the
lift was going to over 7000msl while the tops were a mere 5500 here .
Many other club members took advantage of the great conditions too -
ask Dan he can tell you about taking off ( after landing ) in a
recently harvested wheat field .All good experience Dan !

Saturday Flying [7/26/08]

What started out as a poor day (800 ft cloud bases) turned into a beautiful one with CU's and lift popping everywhere. We gave 3 introductory rides, half a dozen instructional rides and a couple of our members flew the Grob. Ed fixed the broken aileron spring in the Blanik 303BA by crawling into the fuselage. You are our hero, Ed! I introduced a 14 year old to soaring and I think he's hooked! So far this week we've had 3 people express a serious interest in joining our Club. Let's keep up the good work!

From: ZASoars

ALERT
______

CISS has dropped in the US standings and at this stage of the soaring season we are now in 54th position !

It is noted that Dan De Witt and ZA both posted flights this week but many of our great cross country pilots are AWOL . We need your help to get us back into the listing of the top 50 clubs in America .

From a review of the standings it looks like we could easily make it back onto the first page with a little help from our friends . All you have to do is post your flights after each flying day !

For those of you who haven't checked the On Line Contest recently try logging on to http://www.onlinecontest.org/olc-2.0/segelflugszene/index.html

and check out who the big cross country fliers are ( in the world ) .
Or if you feel so inclined scroll to just the US , or check out our Region ( 6 ). You can also check out who the best clubs are in each region - and if you do you'll feel proud when you note CISS is number 2 - behind just Caesar Creek in SSA Region 6 !

Editor's Note: It looks like we are 47th in the USA as I write this, but 2nd in Region 6 (behind our neighbors 150km to the southeast).

Contest Update

Contest scores here.

July started off appropriately with a “bang”, when on Tuesday six pilots took advantage of post cold front conditions that produced lift to 7500’ msl. Tom Ruble, on only his second flight this year in the SZD 55, trounced the field with a speed of 57 mph. Get a load of his statistics: avg glide ratio 44:1 26% of the flight thermalling, 74% running and he did the whole 67 mile flight using only 8 thermals, for average glide exceeding 8 miles. Most significant, however was his 27 mile final glide from 5300 ft msl. Congratulations Tom!

Ron Clarke introduced new member Gordon Watters to the thrill of cross country soaring, taking him on a 61 mile trip in the Grob 103. While they could not contact the lift that went to 7500, they achieved very respectable speeds and proved the Grob is a competitive glider in skilled hands.

Now what we need are some days like this on the weekend for a change!

Thanks to Larry Miller for coming out to tow -- he qualifies for the MVP award for Tuesday.

On Monday I managed a respectable flight of around 280 mi o/r up

turned for home . I told Mike Nichols about the flight and later that

Amazing how you can see the lake effect in N Indiana and W Michigan .

Saturday Report 6/21

The weather forecast was 'thunderstorms likely,' and the wind was out
of the west. We hauled the two-seat gliders down to the east end of
the field and launched a few training and currency flights, keeping
an eye on the sky to the north and west. We also kept the new mower
busy (the south side of the of the runway, for example, was last mowed
two weeks earlier).
Shortly after noon we heard that there was a thunderstorm over Elwood,
so we scrambled to shut down the operation and put everything away.
Fortunately the bad weather took its time rolling in and we got
everything stowed away safely. At 2pm, as I left the parking lot, it
suddenly started hailing!

Update: I was driving east when the storm hit. When the hail started, I turned the car around and drove west to get out from under it. I'm glad I did, because Muncie got large hail a half hour later (probably the same cell).

Just a friendly reminder that the longest day of the year is just

Club member Dan De Witt managed to get to the field by mid afternoon
and with the help of Larry the tow pilot was soon rigged and "in the
air " to celebrate another year completed - the rest of the mid week
fliers had already gone out on course ! He flew an excellent fast
triangle ( Alex / Tipton / Marion ) under great skies with lift to
over 6000msl . A birthday to remember .

Saturday Report

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: ZASoars

The cold front passed thru on Friday and guess what happened the next day ? Beautiful clear air - thermals to over 7000msl and in some cases better than 7 knots !
Yesterday , Saturday the 14th many club pilots " flew the coop " and were heard calling in from above Terry airport (Dan) , Marion (Darren) , Dunkirk (Gerry) and I know Terry Wools and Scot Ortman ranged out to the north 'cos I saw them there .
The day was very good but did start a little late . A pity no one declared a big badge or record flight as we heard the Caesar Creek folks up near Newcastle , heard the Michigan pilots talk of 8000 ft bases and when I landed at 5:30 there was still good lift to near 7000 locally.
A visiting Kentucky pilot ( Joe ) has no doubt reinforced his belief that Indiana thermals are better then those in Kentucky and many of our members will remember yesterday as one of the best so far this year .

See you at the field .

Report of Sunday Operations for 08JUN2008.

The day started very early, with a student taking off around 9:30am.
It was VERY WINDY the whole day, but that didn't stop us from flying.
Two students had very interesting lessons about crosswind takeoffs and
landings. We had a family bringing great-granpaw to fly on his
birthday. Another hispanic member of Dale's ever growing new Familia
took an aerobatic flight. Marlin also took an instruccional flight.
Dick Hutchison showed us once again how one is supposed to fly in a
high-wind day, clocking the longest flight of the day at 55 minutes.
John Weber and Olaf also gave it a try. We welcomed a visitor from
Germany.
Kurt and Brad gave the airport a nice haircut, and at the end of the
day we all gathered at the offices and had a nice, cold Cerveza
Tecate.

Thanks to the greatest crew Cheryl and Mike and Paula, to Tom Eaton
for towing in the morning, and Erick Decker for towing in the

Wow, Saturday flying was much better than expected. Four students had 8 instructional flights. Charlie H. flew for the first time this year - 1.75 hours! Amazing. Lift was strong to 5000 feet, but the 20 mph west wind kept us right over the airport. Pete cooked up some great BBQ chicken. I hear it was finger liking good!

You can't always believe the forecasts . When we put the fleet away
this afternoon ( late ) the temperature was 74 degrees and the dew
point 39 degrees . So that should have meant that lift went to about
8000 msl . NO WAY . We were lucky to get to 5000 msl . I can only
assume that the instability was poor due to the high pressure . That's
the way it goes sometimes. However a very good number of flights were
made and I counted no less than 10 gliders on the field at launch time
- a record mid week turn out ? .
Tod Herrli flew 2 hours after soloing last weekend and I suspect Jack
Hensel may have also . Way to go guys . Not to look like a wimp Gerry
Simpson set off cross country at high speed and when I left the field
he was waiting for his crew ( George, Gordo and Tod ) to retrieve him
out of a hay field somewhere north of Alex.
CU all on the weekend. Thanks to Larry for the tows .

Fwd: Thursday Flying [5/29]

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: ZASoars

It does look like both tomorrow and Thursday are likely to be good
soaring days this week . The proposal is to fly Thursday and Larry
Miller has agreed to tow . Come on out if you can make it, I suggest
11:30am to help get any club gliders and the tow planes out .

ZA.

ps. If anyone wants to fly Wednesday too please let the rest of us
know if any flying arrangements are made !

Fwd: Flying this week ?

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: ZASoars

Fellow Pilots ,

Both Wednesday and Thursday look like good flying days and I believe
we could probably get a tow pilot if there is enough interest .

Please let me know which of those days you would like to fly and if
there is enough interest we'll try to get a day set up.

Fwd: May 24 results

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Don Taylor

Saturday was a tough day to go cross country, but a number of our
pilots did just that. Two who didn't make the scoresheet because they
didn't meet the minimum requirements a la the rules, were Saunders and
Simpson. Too bad we don't have a score for effort. Ristow did make
the flight up to Portland and back and will be added to the May 24
scoresheet as soon as his trace can be retrieved from his logger.

Brad Hays speaks for all, I think, describing his flight to Portland
and back. He made the lowest save I've seen on any trace so far in
the 6 years we've been doing this: 420 ft AGL !! (Be careful out
there: ed.)

In Brad's words "I scrubbed the flight to Marion (spent too much
time getting away from Marion)..... want to claim Alexandria to
Portland to Alexandria. Conditions were not fantastic. Very
disorganized thermals below 3,000 ft. and surface winds made them hard
to center. Better to have stayed high this day. My flight to
Portland against an 8 to 14 knot headwind was predictable...better to
stay on course and fly into and with the lift than to attempt to
circle in it. However, the return flight did not produce the
corresponding tailwind as the winds tended to die-down later in the
day. Almost landed out in a farm field 20+ miles from Alex but,
found some lift at 3 - 400 ft AGL...landing gear extended, ready to
turn to base leg....this one got me away. It was slow going and a
struggle to reach Alex but, good experience for the gray computer.
Most likely won't like the score due to slow return but, it was
fun!!!! VT "

Ground Handling

Remember:
In ground handling, it's not good practice to rotate a sailplane in place on the main gear. It's even less good to do it with two people in the glider. On the asphalt, it can wear a bald spot on the tire. On the grass, especially after a recent rain, it can tear a big divot out of the grass. I forgot this simple rule on Saturday and this was the result:

Firewood Donations Needed (But Read This First)

The upcoming WSPA seminar at Alexandria Airport needs donations of firewood from members who DON'T live in Emerald Ash Borer infested areas.

If you don't know what the Emerald Ash Borer is, it's a nasty little green bug, an exotic pest that kills ash trees. Keep reading...

Cheryl and I have a bonfire/wiener/marshmallow roast planned for one night of the seminar. However, we need some firewood to burn. If those of you who have fireplaces have a leftover piece or two of wood and could bring it to the airport next time you're out, we would be VERY grateful. (We need it by the last week in June.) I don't even HAVE a fireplace, so can't help at all. Kurt says the SE corner of the gravel parking lot would be his preferred place to stack it, temporarily.
Thanks so much in advance!
Marty Hudson

Our airport is in Madison County which is NOT an infested area (yet). It would be illegal to bring firewood there from an infested county, and unfortunately certain townships in Marion County and Hamilton County ARE infested and those entire counties are under firewood quarantine. Please do NOT move any hardwood firewood from Marion or Hamilton County to Alexandria!

Fortunately we as a club are accustomed to navigating complicated regulatory requirements - but who thought a pile of firewood would be such a bureaucratic nightmare? Well, it doesn't have to be. It's legal to bring firewood to Alexandria from a non-quarantine area, and lots of CISS members live in non-quarantined counties.

The quarantine applies to all hardwood firewood, not just ash. It does not apply to conifers.

This will be a great bonfire!

Here's the law.
Here's more information.
Here's a map of Indiana showing infested and uninfested counties.
Quarantines.

Friday Flying

We are flying Friday. Come at 11 and we'll start flying about noon. We'll start with instructional flights and launch the private gliders if and when it becomes soarable. Dr. Jack is optimistic - 400 up to 4000 feet, CU's at 6000. I'm not that optimistic, but we can have a good afternoon of instruction and test flying and maybe get some soaring in! Get ready for a GREAT weekend!

Sunday Hangar Flying Report

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: ZASoars

This Sunday the weather was a little too windy for flying so the
members that showed up lent a hand and some really good work was done
! Dick Hutch was seen mowing around the office with his push mower (
not quite as quick as with the ride-on mower ) The cleaning up and of
the hangars continues and thanks to all especially some of our newest
members - Gordon , Dave and Bruce we set up a new charging station
for the club's hand held radios ( on the west wall near the glider
battery charger ) and have the heated hangar looking really good .
The field crew worked on removing the concrete gate post on the east
end but it's going to be a long process to remove unless we resort to
some kind of mechanical equipment ! They sure were serious about
setting farm gate posts solidly in concrete in past years .
Thanks to all who helped .

Great help given, a little more needed

By now most everyone has enjoyed the improvements that have been made at our GLIDERPORT since we purchased Alexandria airfield. We can lunch in the front office out of the weather. The runway lights are out and soon it will be possible to land on the south side grass if needed. Kurt is working on a plan to level some parts of that area and seed it when the time is right. Every member that wanted a spot at the field for his glider or trailer is now on the airport.

Which brings us to the point of this article. A big THANK YOU goes out to those individual members of our club whose generosity made the purchase of the airport possible. When all the pledges made have been sent in, the Capital Campaign will have raised approximately $51,000 this year.

But not everyone has made a pledge, perhaps maybe because they did not think they could make a significant contribution. But there is no such thing as an INsignificant contribution. Wouldn’t it say a lot about our Club if 100% of our members made a donation of some amount—any amount—to fully enable us to complete the conversion of the field to a gliderport? We still have some important tasks ahead of us: seeding, leveling, draining, signage, showers and bunks to name a few.

The committee would like to ask every member who has not yet pledged or sent in a (tax deductible) gift to consider doing so now to help us complete our airport conversion. What about using part of your windfall tax rebate? If each could help with a gift of say, $100 (or more) we would raise another $3,000 for the cause.

In about a month we plan to post in the main office a plaque with the names of all the contributors who helped make this opportunity a reality. Could we make it 100%?

The Capital Campaign Committee.

Club Meeting on Thursday

Be sure to make our next CISS Club meeting, Thursday, May 15th from 7-9 pm at Fishers Train Station. We plan to spend our first hour brainstorming our vision for our new gilderport. We plan to spend the second hour talking about the details of owning and operating this new facility. Fishers Train Station is on Municipal drive off of 116th street west of I-69.

Fwd: Tuesday flying

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: ZASoars

After voting you might consider soaring. Bob Currie has agreed to tow tomorrow, but only a few have indicated an interest so far. Come on out for a 1pm start if you can. Today was good. DT climbed to 7999 msl and we experienced the passage of a weak cold front while flying. George got current in his new ship CAT. Watch for developments here ! ZA.

Hangar Flying Saturday

ZA reports that although there was no flying today, there was plenty
of work to be done around the airport.
---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: ZASoars
With much to do at "OUR" field we appreciate members help on non
flying days . Today ( Saturday ) about six members showed up at Alex
and we were able to begin to organize some of the newly acquired
"stuff " that was purchased at the auction.
As well a Weight and Balance was done on the Grob .
Thank you to those who came out to help .

Fellow Pilots ,

Monday looks good and Lynn Joyce has agreed to tow beginning 1:15 . I
suggest we get out to the field no later than 12 noon to get things
organized .

Blow Out for Saturday

The wind forecast for May 3 is for 20 mph out of the southwest, gusting to 30 !! And to top it off there is a chance for thunderstorms. The cold front dragging off the low pressure situated north of the Great Lakes will be moving through in the afternoon, setting up what could be a decent soaring day on Sunday. Bottom line: no flying on Saturday. A few of us will be at the field around 10 am for a few hours to do a weight and balance on the Grob, so if your honey-do list is not too long, maybe we can find a list out there.

Sunday should be a different story: looks promising. Monday - Wednesday also look good with tow pilots available on Mon and Wed. Keep the faith.

Hangar Rental

ZA reports that the new Hangar Rental Rates are as follows:

Trailer tie down outside $ 30 per month
Glider trailer in T hangar $ 40 per month
Glider tie down outside $ 45 per month
Glider rigged in big hangar $ 175 per month
Glider rigged in big hangar with (corresponding empty) trailer in the
T hangar $2000/year (paid in advance)

To accommodate everyone, Kurt has agreed to work with the remaining
private power plane owners to ensure space is available in the
T-Hangars no later than the next 60 days, and in fact some space has
already been freed up with the moving of the Stinson out of one of the
T hangars.

If you have a glider and /or trailer you would like to keep at the
field call Kurt to make arrangements.

Any other questions please call Kurt .

(Reposted) Wisdom of the Elders

Recycling an old post - for the benefit of our newer members:

One of the perks of being state record keeper is having access to the old soaring records. I've spent some time organizing these files lately (and entering them into the database on the SSA server) and I found this observation in a faded old document:
It is interesting to note that in this part of the country the high bases, strong winds, and good visibility occur in May and early June. Unfortunately a great many pilots are not mentally ready and physically equipped at this early stage of the soaring season to take advantage of the best weather. This results in fewer really good flights being made and a reduced number of record attempts.

CFIG Joseph N. Bearden Jr. wrote those words in a record application for a flight made on 4 May 1968. It was a Senior Class absolute altitude record flight to 10341'.

Fwd: No Thursday or Friday Flying (May 1 and 2)

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: ZASoars
Fellow Pilots ,

I've checked a number of forecasts and unfortuanately the weather will
not be good enough for safe operations tomorrow or Friday . Basically
the winds will be too strong ( 15 -25 out of the south , and higher at
altitude ) .
Regrettably I don't believe we will be able to fly safely . Thanks
Lynn for offering to tow - maybe next time !

Fwd: Flying this week ? (UPDATED)

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: ZASoars
Looking ahead it seems to me that Thursday may be a reasonable soaring
day . Any interest in putting a day together - or does anyone think
one of the other days may be a better bet ?

Let me know and I'll try get us a tow pilot if there's enough interest .

ZA.

UPDATE:

Fellow Pilots ,

There was good interest expressed for flying on Thursday . However it now looks like we will be under the influence of an approaching warm front that day and forecast conditions do not look good ( especially strong winds aloft ). If things change for the good I'll let you all know as we have a tow pilot who has volunteered .
Your comments welcome .

Auction Action

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: ZASoars

Many thanks to all the members who helped at the Airport Auction today
. Marty and crew did a first class job of traffic control and security
management at the field !
As a result of members advice and encouragement the club has acquired
many VERY useful items at extremely favorable prices. Kurt obviously
missed his calling as his uncanny abilities at knowing when to raise
'em and when to fold 'em in the bidding game proved he was the best by
far the club had to offer when it came to spending our funds well !
Thanks also to those who stayed to the bitter end to clean up and get
things ready for some flying tomorrow .
I believe most will be very appreciative of the much needed items that
the club now owns after the auction .

ZA.

Saturday Flying To Start Late (If At All)

Because of the auction at the airport, flying operations on Saturday, August 26 will be delayed. We'll get the aircraft out and fly (weather permitting) after the auction is over, but not before.

The auction will last at least until early afternoon. There may be a large crowd.

The CISS duty crew will be there at the usual time in the morning to help out with crowd control and to safeguard CISS property.

UPDATE: The weather forecast doesn't sound too promising:

Today: Showers and thunderstorms before 8am. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds. High near 64. West wind between 14 and 16 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Fwd: Historic First For CISS

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: ZASoars

If you had in mind being the FIRST to fly off our newly owned Airfield
- You are too late !
Today, the first day in the rest of our soaring lives at Alexandria
presented challenging conditions , but a few of the dedicated were up
for it .
I was out at the field quite early but several were even earlier . Joe
Gieseke , Bob Currie , Olaf Tessarsyk and at times Pete Detore ,George
Saunders and Dan de Witt all were around and about . But Dick
Hutchinson had his name on the list FIRST.
We have the photographic evidence and despite some very strong cross
winds several pilots made local flights ( Darren , Bob and Ron ) , but
Dick was the first . Lift was as good as 5 knots to 4500msl but all
of that was secondary to the notion that we were the first to fly off
the newly owned field . Come on out just as soon as you can it's a
great feeling to be flying off our own field .

Fwd: No flying Sunday

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: mario.lazaga

Dear fellow CISS members,

The weather for Sunday doesn't look very inviting to fly.
In fact it looks bad.

It will be wet, windy, cold, and there is even a chance of snow and
light rain all day.
The grass runway would be closed and so woud the taxiway.

By 9:00pm on Saturday it didn't look like it would change for the better, so..

I am officially cancelling operations for Sunday, 13th April.
Let's be patient and hope that next weekend will be better.

CISS flying cancelled for Saturday

Based on the detailed forecast for tomorrow, Saturday Apr. 12, we have
decided to cancel flying for the following reasons:

winds will be in the 20 kt range, gusting much higher,
precipitation
overcast skies
windchill temps in the 30s
Take a look at this website
and see if you agree! That's the bad news. The good news is that it
will not be a day you'll have to do any yard work either. Better days
lie ahead.

We are also now 28th in the US , and ahead of Chicago Glider club.
Just wait 'til the ridges stop working and the Eastern and Western
pilots have to start flying thermals - we will then be their match (
maybe ) .

Please submit your flights after each cross country flight . John
Weber and I flew 100 miles yesterday and I even submitted my puny 32
miles today ! John - how about submitting your good flight from
yesterday - with those short wings you will probably add good points

Fwd: YOU MADE IT HAPPEN

---------- Forwarded message ----------
> The first phase of the "Field of Dreams" campaign to raise funds for our down payment has been very successful thanks to the generous members of our club.
>
> All being well, the CENTRAL INDIANA SOARING SOCIETY will own its own airfield and facilities before the end of April 2008!
>
> The Capital Campaign Committee would like to say THANK YOU to each and every club member who stepped up to help us raise sufficient funds to complete the purchase of the field.
>
> At the time of writing this update no less than 62% of members contacted have sent in contributions to the drive - that's exceptional support and speaks we believe to the intense interest and love of soaring that our members hold.
>
> As a result of this generosity each member will enjoy both immediate benefits like being able to have full use of the airport facilities but also have helped establish a permanent home for what will continue to be the premier glider club in Indiana. Our club is almost 50 years old and finally we will have our own home !
>
> By the way - It's never too late , and for those of you who have been thinking about giving but not gotten around to it we would love to include you on the list of contributors that will go up in the club house this year . If you are able to help us in the final week of phase one of the fund raising drive give Scot Ortman or Ron Clarke a call and we'll send you a package which you can review and decide how best to help our campaign. Every single contribution will be gratefully accepted.

As we move into phase two of the campaign, we hope to raise additional
funds to reduce our mortgage over the next three years and keep our
flying affordable.

Again, THANKS! YOU ARE THE BEST!
