Glassfibre Repairs

Friedel Weber, DG"s owner, has made arrangements to provide a copy of Ursula Hanle's Petite Plastic Plane Patch Primer for download. My understanding is this is an excellent reference for anyone interested in glassfibre repairs; but, that it has not been generally available in the past. The download is free, but there is a request for a nominal donation, if it is convenient. Full details are available at:

Membership Meeting

There will be a Membership Meeting at the MCL Cafeteria on November19th at 7:00p.m. Elections for officers for 2010 will be held and Mario Lazaga will have a presentation on cross-country(X-C) badge flying, so all you budding x-c pilots will have the opportunity to learn from a master strategist. I am expecting the Kestrel class to expand considerably next season with all the newly licensed pilots. There is nothing more fun and challenging than x-c and making your "back yard" larger, as it was described to me a few short years ago by a master x-c artist. Immediately following, we will adjourn to a nearby establishment for refreshments, fellowship, comraderie & esprit de corps. We will need to thank all those involved for the excellent job and timing of the runway sealing project, especially Kurt Ristow, Ron Clark, Don Taylor, and George Saunders (hope I haven't left any major contributors to the work project out). Hope to see as many of you there as possible.

You Must Get A Plastic Copy of Your Pilot's Licence

http://www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/airmen_certification/airmen_services/

Pilots need to upgrade to a plastic pilot certificate by March 31,
> 2010. This date is based on the 2 years after effective rule date.
> And it's easy and fast. 4 to 6 weeks if by mail, 6 to 10 days online.
> $2 if you just request a replacement, free if you are requesting removal
> of SSAN.
>
> Special notes: They will not put your original paper date of
> issue on the new one. It also states that you do not have to destroy
> the old one if you want to save it as a momento, just that you can not
> use it for flying.

Avoid the rush; do it now if you are still depending on a paper certificate.

Last Scheduled Day

We made a buncha flights. Ron got the trophy back from Caesar Creek. Marlon Tessarzyk completed his B and C badges, Tod Herrli finished the flight portions of the Bronze badge, and I had Yvonne up in the Grob -- her first time in a glider since the late 1960s, and she enjoyed it! A good day.

9:30 AM Nov. 7th - HELP GET OUR FLEET TUNED UP!

Fellow members ,

Ed our Maintenance Chief has appointed me scribe for the year end project of getting our fleet "up to snuff " as they say . So here's the scoop : Plans are to do work each Saturday in November and December beginning November 7 . Start time will be 9:30am. and with luck we'll get most of the work done before the real cold weather sets in. Nyal has insisted that we continue the tradition of that well earned lunch together at Rachels promptly when he gets hungry around noon time.

We will move a couple of the aircraft into the middle hangar and begin work on one of the the Blaniks first . Day one will begin with compiling lists of " to do " items and if you already have some items to suggest please send a note to Ed or me to include them on our hit lists. We will keep one Blanik in flying condition as long as we can to allow any possibility of flying if weather permits in Nov / Dec. This can always be done in the afternoon following work and lunch ! Obviously the More the Merrier .

In past years these year end maintenance projects have been very instructive for some members, they keep the Club Spirit alive and well and for me have always been a lot of fun . So come on out and join us as many days as you can manage as the flying season changes to "Maintenance Time ".

See you November 7,

Ron (ZA)

Another C Badge

John Gardner came to I-99 today, after flight had been cancelled owing to punk weather and lack of interest. Ground crew were leaving but we still had a tow pilot. Johns family offered to pull out the equipment and put it back if we would let him make another attempt at the precision landing required for the C-badge. His persistence paid off and he wore the badge home.

Students, there is still time this season to work on these badges. If you lack just an a task or two to finish up your badge, come on out and get it. You'll be able to wear it on your jacket all winter while you dream about getting the next one!

More Details on Kendallville Weekend

Following are details on the CISC / BSC flying weekend at Kendallville August 27, 28, 29, 30.
We are focusing on the 29th and 30th, but will have tows available on the 27th and 28th if anyone wants to come early.
We have scheduled a group dinner in the hangar at the airport for 6:30 on Saturday August 29. It is being catered by our favorite BBQ chef and the menu will be slow smoked BBQ Brisket, Ribs, and Chicken along with salad, slaw, cornbread, baked beans, fresh local corn on the cob, cheese cake, coffee and lemonade. It is $20 per person and reservations are needed by Monday August 24th.
Please email Dinner Reservations to John Earlywine at jke4034@aol.com or call 260-347-9260.
Everyone is welcome to bring other beverages of their choice.
Airport Camping is available. Restrooms are available and a Shower room is available for $5 per day on the airport. A microwave and limited refrigerator space are available in the terminal and there are many restaurants nearby.
The phone in the New Horizons Aviation Kendallville FBO office at the airport is 260-347-9260.
Camping sites are available at Bixler Lake Campground, a City Park. Camping sites with electricity and water are available for approx $20 per night and primitive campsites are available for approx $16 per night. The phone number is 260-347-9941. Additional info is available at www.kendallville-in.org. This is about 5 miles from the airport.
Special airport rates are available at the Best Western motel (260-347-5263) for $75 plus tax and at the Holiday Inn Express (260-582-4047) for $79 plus tax. Request the airport rate. Both are within 3-4 miles.
Reservations are not necessary at the airport, and if someone wants to use the other options, they should contact the facility directly.
Tows will be $34 to 2000 ft agl, and $0.80 per 100 ft above 2000.
We have tow ropes with 1420# (schweizer ring) weak links and with 2200#. (tost ring), and adaptors are available for both if required for the other ring.
We are wondering if the people flying want to have a common task, just do some local flying, or work out some other informal plan. Will everyone be bringing a glider, or will some want to rent the local 2-33?
Please let us know if you have any additional ideas or questions.
It would help with the planning if you could let us know approximately how many people might be coming to fly. Anyone who might not be flying but would just like to attend the dinner is certainly welcome at the Saturday event.
John Earlywine
As requested by John Earlywine please notify him at the e-mail address or call him. The menu sounds terrific, but will not be a Brazilian BBQ. DO TAKE NOTICE that the deadline for reservations is Monday August 24th!!!!!!!

Fabulous Thursday

Thursday proved to be a spectacular day at Alex. John G. (the younger) had a one hour and 24 minute first solo. Dave C. flew the Blanik five hours and 10 minutes. My friend, Tom was lifted from his wheel chair into the front seat of the Grob by a bunch of burly glider pilots (thanks John G. (younger and older), Dave C. and Larry M. )

John is our 5th student to fly solo this summer, and the third teenager! Way to Go CISS!

While we were having fun, Ron C. power washed the T-hangars in preparation for painting. Dick H. did the trim mowing. Nyal W. made a special trip to help sign off John on his solo. Larry M. spent the whole day towing. And behind it all we saw the tireless hand of Kurt who keeps the airport looking beautiful. Thanks all!

Thursday Flying

Thursday (Aug 6) looks like the best soaring day of the week. Larry M. will tow for us starting at 11 AM with instructional rides. I plan to instruct all day. Around noon, I could use a hand helping a wheelchair bound person into the Grob for a guest ride.

See you at Alex,
George

Re: TSA Directive

My recent post was precipitate: It appears that the rules have NOT changed and that gliding students are exempted from the security rules outlined there.

However, the rules do apply to instructors and we must do the online recurrent training annually.

Nyal Williams

TSA Directive

I have received notice from the Transportation Security Administration that we as instructors must:

1. Complete initial and annual recurrent "Security Awareness Training" which is available on the internet.

http://download.tsa.dhs.gov/fssa/training/

(Copy and paste) Take training, print out and keep annually.

2. "Request and retain" proof of citizenship for all US citizens whom we train.

3. Register with the TSA prior to training any alien (non-citizen) student.

4. Require than any alien student be registered with TSA prior to receiving training.

This means that all students must provide to us as quickly as possible a copy of a birth certificate and a government-issued photo ID for us to keep on file at the airport.

John Earlywine from the Kendallville soaring club has invited us to come up and spend the weekend Aug 29th. He is offering a Brazilian BBQ and Towing Thursday through Sunday. We will still have our normal operations at Alex but are encouraging any members with wanderlust to head north for the weekend. They are promising a Brazilian BBQ for anyone who shows up. No soaring Saturday July 25

As I write this, the thunder and rain are apparent outside my window, and the forecast is for more all morning. And when the front passes in early afternoon, the winds are expected to kick up to 15-25 mph with higher gusts. Of course there were some GREAT soaring days duing the week. This seems to have been the pattern this year: good weekday soaring, lousy weekends. See you next time. Don Taylor, Crew Chief.

Gold Distance Times Two

Monday, July 6th 2009, was one of the best, if not the absolute best in Indiana this year.
Cloud bases to 6500, thermal strengths of 5 knots average, and best of all, the conditions lasted from about 11:30am to about 7:00pm.
Knowing that the day was going to be good, Gerry Simpson and Dan Dewitt decided to give a try to the 300Km gold distance.
We spent about 2 hours Sunday evening planing for the flight.
The wind was predicted to be about 15mph from the North-West, so the flight plans contained long legs along the expected cloud streets.
Alex-Frankfort-FoxStation-Randolph-Alex for Gerry.
Alex-Frankfort-Wabash-Randolph-Alex for Dan.
Monday morning, Gerry, Dan, Jack Hensel and I went to the airport to assemble and launch.
Gerry Simpson took off at 12:20; Dan Dewitt at 12:36.
Five hours and a few minutes later Gerry Simpson landed. Two minutes later Dan Dewitt landed.
Both, YES! BOTH! Gerry and Dan, PV and IZ, had successfully completed their declared 300Km tasks.

Congratulations to Gerry and Dan, from all of us at CISS.

Fwd: Visiting Pilots at Alexandria

Several glider pilots stopped by at Alex to see our field and in some
cases to rig and fly the Indiana skies today (Friday 6/12) . All of
them had been down flying in the Region 6 contest at Caesar Creek and
were returning home . These are the kind of folks we all should
encourage to come and fly with us . Each of them purchased a temporary
weekend membership ( $25 ) and paid for their tows ( They need to be
SSA members ) . All were most impressed with our facilities and some
asked about us maybe hosting a "Regionals " sometime in the future.
Tell your Glider friends from out of state to come visit us and take
advantage of the " Weekend membership" plan.
Thanks to George for extending the invite to these glider friends .

We need all the help we can get EARLY - to get the tables prepared , the equipment out to the field and of course prepare the breakfast ! Winching Done

There will be no winching on Monday, May 25th. We are done with our two week winch introduction during which 22 people took 80 flights. The Board will discuss winching at its June 20th meeting - so let the Board know how you feel about winching (pro and con). Thanks to everyone who made our winch experience a success!

Monday Winching

We had another great afternoon of winching today thanks to Tod H. , our trusty winch operator. Larry M. renewed his winch endorsement. Larry P. flew three very successful flights with Ed Lossing as instructor. Kurt was out mowing and guttering and got in a couple of flights. His professional assessment of the winch: "Whoopee!" We had NO rope breaks and NO weak link breaks. We are starting to get the hang of this thing.

I'll send an email to let you know when we are winching again.

Winching on Monday

Those who want to practice their winching skills are invited to Alex Monday, May 18 from 3 to 6 pm. Let me know if you plan to come. We have winch instructors and an operator (Thanks Tod Herrli!). So come out out.

By the way -we had very successful first weekend of winching. We had 42 winch launches - some to 1100 feet, several that got away and thermalled (though that was not our goal.) Thanks to everyone who showed up, worked hard and had a lot of fun!

Sunday TFR Over Indy

A NOTAM has been issued for Sunday, May 17, 2009. A 30 NM radius TFR and a smaller no-fly zone will restrict flight in Indianapolis and the surrounding area from 4:30 p.m. to 7:50 p.m. local time.

Per Dave Newill:
If you are flying after 4:30 beware - many of our airports are under the TFR - so best to be home at I99.

The rain date is Sunday May 31 , so Crews for both MAY the 30th and the 31st should take note as we will need your help on one of those two days !

The objective of this exercise is to have as many power pilots fly in to Alex. and experience SOARING . Of course we hope to encourage as many as possible to take a glider ride and join the club .

Hopefully ALL club members will be able to attend , enjoy a great pancake breakfast with us and be ready to answer questions about soaring and the benefits of belonging to our club . We need volunteers to help set up, park the 'planes , do the cooking and help with the glider rides we hope to sell -

If you would like to help please let Ron Clarke or Dan De Witt know and if you know any power pilots you think would enjoy this event please give them a call to encourage them to "Fly in " . You might like to remind them of our new field radio frequency ( 123.05 ) .

CU at the field ,
Ron and Dan.

Fwd: No flying Sunday 05Apr2009

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Mario
Dear fellow soaring enthusiasts,

The weather forecast for tomorrow is not good:
25% chance of rain in the morning
75% chance of rain in the afternoon, haze and mist.

Average winds of 10-12 mi/h through the day and increasing as the day
progresses.
All this when we are still rusty from the winter months.
Dr Jack shows dark blue all over Central Indiana.

There's no reason to start the season pushing our luck.
Save your gas and tow money for the next day.

Operations are cancelled for 05APR2009

February 16 in East-Central Indiana!

Who would have thought we could have a day like this? High winds, snow, ice, gray skies, low ceilings are often our lot this time of year, and we walk around with heads down avoiding the weather and dreaming of June soaring.

Today was different. Dr. Jack’s Blipmaps predictions and those of the sport aviation’s USAirNet indicated we would have light winds of 5 mph, a temperature/dewpoint spread of about 18 degrees, and a cloud base of about 5000ft. Well, it happened! We saw it coming and got ready.

A good lunch at Rachel’s fortified us for the cold, we opened the hangar doors at around 12:30. Tod Herrli, George , Ron , and Nyal got three one-hour flights with the help of Bob and 87Z. Tod flew with Nyal in the back seat yakking away, Ron and George went off for an hour (not sure who was flying, but most likely it was shared), and then Nyal flew with Ron in the back seat as backup and encouragement. It was c-o-o-o-ld!

Mind you, these flights were in a Blanik; N809S. The first flight reached 4900ft msl; we cut short to give others a chance. The second flight went out to stay an intended hour, and got back with 1:02, reporting that they had gone to Elwood and back, and the third flight repeated this tour and then made an excursion to the north to check the lift over the ethanol plant -- 1:07 flight time. We encountered lift at 1000ft up, and cloud streets everywhere! We stopped short to come down and warm up, but the lift was still going strong. There was at least four hours of good lift today; count ‘em --- f – o – u – r hours on February 16, in East-Central Indiana!

These Blaniks are perfectly capable X/C gliders on good days when the lift is dependable and enough time is available; we certainly flew silver distance in an hour’s time. It was out and back, but with the wind situation as it was, we could as easily have done it either east or west, upwind or downwind. Had we rigged glass ships and started earlier (the clouds were showing lift while we ate lunch), we could have done 100K, 200K, maybe even 300K today – if we had dressed warmly enough!

On that point, I have discovered that these dry chemical foot warmers are great for the toes. You should keep some around so you can fly more comfortably in the late fall, winter, and early spring. (It didn’t occur to me to use mine today.)

And come out to fly when there is a big dew point / high temperature spread with light winds.

Placing Info on the Blog

Several people have asked about the process for posting to this blog. Here's how it works:

Only people listed as 'authors' can actually post to the weblog. If you want to write a blog post, though, just write it up with a suitable title and email it to one or more authors and ask them if they'll post it for you.

The authors are currently Nyal Williams, George Saunders, Don Taylor, and me (Darren).

The blog is not an official instrument of the non-profit entity CISS. The governance of the weblog has relied solely on my own judgment (for better or worse). There aren't, or weren't, any formal rules about becoming an 'author' here because I felt I was able to keep up with it without help. Then I went inactive in the club and realized that we probably needed a few more authors because I wasn't checking in as frequently. These days I'm asking George Saunders to make the decisions (including, specifically, decisions about who to add as an author).

If you want to write up a blog post and send it to an 'author' to post for you, by all means do so. It helps if you can actually write it up in full. Including links and and coming up with a catchy subject line also helps. If you start doing this on a regular basis, maybe you'll be on the short list next time new authors are being recruited.

(If you just want to see what blogging is like, then get yourself a Blogger account and set up your own blog. You can write about anything you want, even soaring!)

Darren

p.s. Please don't be offended if you send an article to me and I don't respond or post it; I've got a lot of non-soaring stuff to deal with just now. Thanks!

800 Feet and Descending Fast

Correspondent David Colclasure wrote:
I thought this should go on our blog! Capt Sullenberger, 57, who ditched US Airlines Flight 1549 safely into the Hudson River in New York, has over 40 years of flying experience and heads his own safety consulting business.

The former US Air Force fighter pilot from California has served as an instructor and as an Airline Pilots Association (Alpa) safety chairman and accident investigator.

He has taken part in several USAF and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) accident investigations.

Much has been made of the Captain Chesley Sullenberger’s years of experience in the cockpit, but one thing on his resume stands out: he holds a commercial glider rating. Not only that, but according to the FAA Airmen Registry, he is also a rated glider instructor.

Check out the picture, probably under 800 ft, and falling fast!

Thanks,

David Colclasure

Prepare Now for Cross Country

Fellow Soaring pilots, As the Soaring Season is only just "around the corner " I would like to encourage all who enjoy or would like to enjoy more cross country flying to think about some modest goals for the 2009 season. Nyal, I know, will continue to manage the SSA Badge Program and many of you have already earned several badges beyond the initial " A " badge. If you are interested in moving on up though the "B" , "C" , Bronze and on to the Silver , Gold and Diamond badges there exists an excellent series of handbooks written by Bob Wander covering the rquirements for each successive badge. SSA advertize and sell them . Talk to Nyal about what you need to do to prove your flying skills and I know many of you could very easily earn that next badge .

Many of you have also already accomplished a lot of cross country soaring by participating in the club contest the past several years and I'm sure you would readily agree that besides the FUN it provides, the result was improved flying skills on your part . Lets keep the Club Contest alive and well, it's good for us all . Don Taylor is of course the man to talk to if you have any questions or suggestions to improve our system . I happen to think it's pretty close to ideal but would like to see a few pilots agree to fly the same course some days just to add some " on course comraderie " .

Well , what about setting some modest records ? If you have ever paged through the Indiana State Record listings ( on the SSA site under " Soaring Achievements " ) you would readily notice that there are some "easy" ones for the taking. For example in the World Class ( PW 5 ) there are a number of unset records . You could decide for yourself on a modest triangle ( 35 mile say ) or a modest 3 turn point course , go out and fly it and the record would be yours !Likewise if you could talk a qualified instructor or other cross country pilot to accompany you in the Grob ( or a Blanik ) there are a couple of easy to fly records available - How about a 36 mile straight out flight to a pre set goal ? That would do it . I'd be happy to join any one of you on such a flight - just let me know when ! Even in the Standard Class several relatively easy records could be flown by any of you with Standard class gliders .

And if some of you would like we could meet sometime in the off season to discuss how to go about preparing for such flights ( badges or records ) or how to file the paperwork . In fact if there is enough interest I would happily put on a short seminar . Let me know if anyone would like to meet next Saturday ( Feb 7 ) as we have the use of a room at the Remy facilities mid way between Indy and Muncie over the lunch hour . Stretching yourself by going for higher badges , flying contests and records is one of the very best ways to IMPROVE YOUR SOARING SKILLS in the 2009 season . Happy Landings , Ron (ZA)
